In order for us to look our best, feel our best, and to be our best, we need to ensure we look after our bodies, both on the inside, and out. The problem however, is that most people don’t do that, and instead abuse their bodies, whether they know they’re doing so, or not.

The average diet in the developed world is sadly made up of far, far too many unhealthy foods and ingredients, and nowhere near enough nutrients. Most foods are heavily processed, contain virtually no nutrition, and are packed full of unhealthy ingredients such as trans fats, salt, sugar, and artificial chemicals. To promote optimal health and well-being, we should instead make an effort to consume fresh, healthy, and natural foods, just as nature intended. Herbs for example, are not just useful for making delicious meals, they can also be used to promote wellness and optimal health. Here’s a look at a few basic herbs for increased wellness.

Rosemary – Not only does rosemary work extremely well with garlic, to make fantastic tasting potatoes, but more importantly, rosemary is also a herb that promotes health and well-being in a number of ways. Rosemary contains active ingredients, including carnosol, sometimes known as carnosic acid, which has been found to provide anti-carcinogenic properties, meaning it can help to prevent cancer. Not only that, but rosemary has also been found to help strengthen the blood vessels, promote heart health, improve memory, and aid in digestion.

Turmeric – You may know turmeric as a common ingredient in Indian cooking, as it is instantly recognizable due to its deep golden yellow color. Not only does turmeric provide a great flavor to many dishes, it is also one of the most health filled herbs on our planet. Turmeric contains an active ingredient known as curcumin, which functions as an extremely powerful anti-inflammatory. Because of this, turmeric is great for the relief of headaches, and for the prevention of joint pain and discomfort. What’s more, curcumin is also thought to help to reduce the size of precancerous cells in the colon, so there is strong evidence to suggest that it can help to prevent colon cancer, especially when consumed with a potent antioxidant known as quercetin.

Parsley – Parsley may primarily be used for garnishing your dishes and making them look nice, but it turns out that this green superhero can also provide a number of other health benefits in the process. Parsley is naturally high in vitamins and antioxidants, especially vitamin A and vitamin C. Because of this, it helps to strengthen the immune system, the antioxidants can help to eradicate free-radicals and toxins from the body, and the vitamin A can help promote healthy vision. What’s more, it has also been found to be very effective at helping to naturally lower blood pressure, making it very useful for people suffering with hypertension.

St John’s Wort – St John’s Wort is currently one of the most effective mood enhancing ingredients in the entire world, and it is used to help treat and prevent mental health disorders such as stress, anxiety, and depression, every single day. In fact, many studies have found it to be just as effective, if not more so, at treating depression, than prescription drugs such as Prozak, which can have some pretty horrendous side effects. The herb is rich in melatonin, which helps us to relax and helps improve our mood. This means it not only helps us feel better, but it also helps us get to sleep, which can also improve mental health.
